The Old House Shop
The Old House Shop, situated at No. 5 Kloof Street, Plettenberg Bay is beyond any doubt one of Plettenberg Bay’s hidden treasures, and a shopper’s paradise for the whole family.
Now an historic monument, this was the first house to be built in Plettenberg Bay. The year was 1910, the same year a Captain Sinclair set up a whaling station where the Beacon Island Hotel stands today. Set amidst fynbos, it was a simple home, built mostly of corrugated iron and wood. A roughly hewn out dirt road ran past the front door.
Today, the Old House Shop is to be found along an unpretentious tarred road in the town which has grown up around it, but the winsomeness of this historic cottage still retains its enchantment of a bygone era. The old wooden floors creek and rumour has it that there are ghosts roaming the rooms at the dead of night! What stories must abound if walls could talk!
Now the corrugated outer walls have been painted a fresh white and complemented with sky blue window frames, with shutters and front door to match. The porch, with its flower tubs, roses, lavender and hanging baskets, is ablaze with colour.
Walking through the low white picket gate, one steps through the front door into another world. Owner, Susie Ovenstone, with her unquestionable and exquisite sense of style, has created an entrancing world of vibrancy and charm. Susie’s travels have taken her far and wide, both locally and internationally, in search of the unique. There is something ‘special’ to be found in every nook and cranny to excite the eye for everyone – men, women and children of any age.
With her sense of flair, from handpicked designer clothes to bed linen, homeware, a delightful children’s corner, provocative accessories and so much more, there is no doubt you will find something very special at The Old House Shop.
