November 4, 2022:12:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Our final event for 2022 will be a talk and curry lunch at Fairview House – the home of the Rattray family since 1980.

  • Friday, 4 November 2022
  • Venue: Fairview House
  • Time : 12 noon
  • Price: R350 per person
  • Speaker: Andrew Rattray

The price includes Andrew’s talk and tour of the buildings followed by a curry lunch

Butter chicken curry or vegetarian curry with naan bread and sambals and a selection of salads. Followed by malva pudding with crème anglaise.

Fairview House is fully licensed so refreshments including a selection of beer, and wine by the glass can be purchased. Andrew’s excellent wine list will also be available.

Andrew will tell us not only about the history of Fairview but will also talk about his grandparents Peter and Gillian, his father David and his uncle Martin.

His talk will start in 1924 with the birth of Clifton Grey(Peter) Rattray, growing up in Johannesburg with his grandfather William Grey Rattray and his time in the merchant navy on board the Rochester Castle with reference to Operation Pedestal and the relief of Malta.

Following that, his career as a patent attorney, and his meeting George Bunting of Fugitives Drift which led to the purchase of the adjacent property where his son David later built Fugitives Drift Lodge.

And finally on to Peter and Gill’s retirement here at Fairview and his involvement in all things local.

It was here that Gillian, an acclaimed novelist and artist, wrote two of her books, “A Cape Country Chronicle” and “In A Country Garden”, which detail her life on the property.

And how with Martin’s design work Fairview House came to be what it is today.

Andrew Rattray (David and Nicky’s eldest son) together with his wife Anel and their 3 daughters moved from Fugitives Drift to Fairview in January 2019.

Peter died aged 97 earlier this year.
